Here are the topics you’ll be onboarding to fine-tune your intermediate skills:

Topic 1 - Surfing conditions

The first topic within your intermediate surf camp in Punta Mita and Sayulita with Wild Mex will help you get to grips with reading surf conditions.

Your journey from an intermediate surfer to an advanced one means that you’ll learn how to read when the waves are surf-ready! This also includes:

  •         Understanding optimum surf conditions
  •         Learning how to read swell charts
  •         Knowledge about the different types of surf breaks
  •         Learning how the wind conditions affect waves

With this, you’ll know the best time to surf Punta Mita, Sayulita, and all other breaks in our area and beyond after onboarding this crucial intermediate step!

Topic 2 - When to use which board

Learning to surf in Mexico is probably one of the best gifts you can give yourself as an adventurer and a surfing enthusiast.

With a wide range of surfboards available for rent at Wild Mex (over 300 in fact), you can perfect your techniques with shortboards, longboards, fish boards, or funboards!

Your personal surf guide will also help you master your board choice based on the surf conditions and the surf break you’re going for.

What’s the best time to surf Punta Mita? Discover more here…

Topic 3 - Binary wave selection

If you’ve taken beginner surf lessons in La Lancha, Sayulita or anywhere else in the world, you may already know what binary wave selection is. If you’re a self-taught maestro, maybe not! - Binary wave selection is all about reading and selecting the waves as they come to you.

In surfing, wave selection is an art, and it usually draws the line between beginners and intermediate surfers.

Your intermediate Surf Camp in Punta Mita and Sayulita will help you learn binary wave selection, which in turn, will have several impacts on your surf session… The first and most obvious one is that you’ll learn how to ride superior and longer waves - simply by choosing the right ones. Learning binary wave selection will also require you less physical effort to paddle and catch the wave of your choice! Win-win, right?

Topic 4 - Positioning on the wave

If you’ve had exposure to a lot of surf in the past, positioning may sound like an easy topic. Buuut in actual fact, all intermediate-advanced surfers know that positioning can always be improved, after all, nothing happens far out on that flat shoulder!

When learning to surf in Mexico with us, we’ll teach you how to position yourself to stay close to the pocket, how to position yourself to get ready for a trick, and how to position yourself to try ripping steeper shoulders!

We told you didn’t we, it’s all about position baby!

Topic 5 - Generating speed

As you progress and get more comfortable with different parts of the wave, this is where you’ll begin to draw the line from being called an intermediate surfer to an adept one! A beginner or intermediate surfer goes with the flow of the ocean which is why the waves guide them across. Whilst more adept ones learn how to stay close to the pocket, the steepest and most powerful part of the wave to get the best out of every wave on offer!

As a pre-master surfer, you will learn how to control the reins of your surfboard’s speed. You’ll be shown how to throw your arms forward, decompressing and compressing up and down the face of the wave, all whilst moving to specific parts of the wave with the proper technique by shifting your weight over the surfboard at specific moments on the wave to create your own acceleration.

Learn this and just wait to watch surfing become more and more exciting!

Private Surf Camp Prices Sayulita & Punta Mita

The best time to surf Punta Mita, the bottom turn and top turn takes years of experience to maneuver, but with us, you’ll learn the basics!

Topic 6 - Bottom turn & Top turn

This is the skill that even expert surfers still need improvement on. Even during the best time to surf Punta Mita, the bottom turn and top turn takes years of experience to maneuver, but with us, you’ll learn the basics!

You’ll learn how to use your head as your steering wheel. (Where you look is where you’ll go!) Both the top and bottom turn is initiated with your head, then your shoulders, arms, and hips to follow.

If it sounds complicated now, don’t sweat it! You’ll get the fundamentals of this concept in the sixth topic of your intermediate surf camp in Punta Mita and Sayulita with Wild Mex, and with practice, you’ll be good to go!

Topic 7 - Cutback

Be prepared to also onboard the basics of the cutback!

Haven’t heard of it before? Well, the cutback is when a surfer changes direction with a turn using their rails to go back towards the breaking part of the wave.

This is a vital maneuver as it’ll position you back to the “power source” - the steepest and most enjoyable part of the wave!

Topic 8 - Identifying your weak spots

Sometimes muscles will get fatigued and you'll feel it, especially in your weak areas! BUT, many times the surf will be more demanding on your mind…

Your instructor at your Surf Camp in Punta Mita and Sayulita will help you identify and work on your weak spots, physical and mental!

Helping you transform your weaknesses from what is holding you back to the things that motivate you to perfect your surfing skills!

Your surf instructor at your Surf Camp in Punta Mita and Sayulita will help you identify and work on your weak spots, physical and mental!

Summing Up the itinerary of your Intermediate Surf Lessons in La Lancha

When you’re learning to surf in Mexico with us, there are only two things you need: the passion to perfect your surf skills and the dedication to master the waves we have in store for you!

Only after you’ve mastered these maneuvers can you work on progressing from the intermediate to the advanced level.

But until then, get ready to experience all those feel-good chemicals - endorphins/the stoke you’ll experience during and after your surf sessions with us!

P.S The release of endorphins is also linked to a state of euphoria! Something our surf coaches know all a little too well. We are pumped to share these secrets with YOU! 😉

Till then, best of luck preparing for the camp - we can’t wait to welcome you!

What To Pack For Your Next Surf Trip? – Your Surf Camp In Punta Mita & Sayulita Checklist

What To Pack For Your Next Surf Trip? - Your Surf Camp In Punta Mita & Sayulita What To Pack For Your Next Surf Trip? – Your Surf Camp In Punta Mita & Sayulita

Just signed up for the Wildmex Surf Camp? Oh boy, oh boy! What an adventure this is going to be…

Just imagine gliding across glassy ocean waves, using your power to ride a fast-moving wall of water. You feel the speed, the wind in the face, and are deeply connected to the awesome energy of mother earth.

Now, imagine how it will feel when you master the mellow, white waters and move on to skimming through glassy green waves and steeper sets surfing in Punta Mita’s famous La Lancha!

We’re sure you cannot contain your excitement to get to camp to learn surfing in Punta Mita, Sayulita, and La Lancha! However, with all this excitement building up, packing can seem like a tertiary task… Especially if you’re a newbie to surfing, it can be quite tricky to know exactly what to pack

So, that’s why our team at Wild Mex has done the hard work so you don’t have to! Here is a list of your backpack must-haves when you are learning to surf in Punta Mita or Sayulita at our Wildmex surf camp. Carry everything essential and nothing extra you can thank us later!

Packing the Essentials

3 people Surfing in Sayulita and Punta Mita with Wild Mex’s surf camp Surfing in Sayulita and Punta Mita with Wild Mex’s surf camp

We know you want to be equipped with the essentials for the beach, the varying terrain, and your stay at camp. Yet at the same time, the airline fee with the weight limit means you can’t carry a load of stuff!

However, if you do happen to forget something, or simply need a top-up, know that Sayulita town does offer plenty of Mini Marts and markets to purchase essentials and toiletries that you might need, so don’t fret!

There are, however, a few things that you ought to keep in your backpack, so you don’t have to head to the market every time you need something, or in case you do, you have the cash in hand to buy. Check it out below…

Access to Cash

Make sure that you have access to cash whilst at your surf camp in Sayulita for any emergencies. This means carrying an ATM card and money in USD or Mexican Pesos in case your ATM card fails or you cannot access an ATM in the moment needed.

Travel Essentials

Make sure you’re carrying your airline tickets in a bag where you can access them whenever the need be. You should also have a valid passport with at least 3 months to expiration in case you would want to extend your stay. (Something which many of our surf campers decide to do!) We also recommend booking a flexible ticket, you know, just in case!

Once you’re enjoying pumping surf days, seeing rapid improvement, and taking part in the gnarliest surfing in Sayulita and Punta Mita, the enthralling ocean waves will keep you from going back to routine… Sorry, not sorry!

Accessories and Clothing

Pack the most comfortable and rugged pair of sandals, Crocs, Gators, Tevas, Reef Walkers, Birkenstocks or similar water shoes that can get wet without being unpleasant. When you are learning to surf in Mexico, it’s not uncommon to walk through luscious jungle trails to get to the best waves. You may also experience getting on and off boats to surf epic waves in the middle of the Pacific, dreamy right? Sure is when you pack the correct footwear!

For the November to March season, surfing in Sayulita can be a little chilly. You won’t feel cold in the water, but once you get out of the water and the winds blow on your wet body, you are likely to feel cold. So, make sure you pack a sweatshirt or fleece jacket, shorts, at least two bathing suits, and any other beachwear you may need.

When learning to surf in Sayulita or our nearby beaches, the sun in the afternoon can be scorching, So, you should be carrying a sun hat, sunglasses, sarong, or pareo (for females), and any other beachwear you may need. A small flashlight along with your necessary medications are also essentials when learning to surf in Mexico. We also recommend bringing a watch or an alarm to ensure wake up for sunrise surf sessions and a camera to capture all the insane moments you’re about to embark on.

If you are doing our Yoga/Surf camp, we recommend bringing shorts over pants and any essential yoga-wear or comfortable gym wear you’d like to use to partake in these sessions.

Sunscreen

When purchasing sunscreens, make sure that you buy the waterproof kind. This is usually +5% zinc or titanium dioxide with an SPF of over 30. For the body we recommend HIC 2X sun block, Alligator, Hawaiian Blend Sport with Zinc, or La Roche-Posay Helioblock S Athelios SPF40.

You should also go for an additional face block which is necessary for swimming and surfing. We recommend Vertra, Shiseido Sun Protection Skin Foundation SPF 35, HIC 2X sunblock,  Zinka Nosecoat, Headhunter Surf Screen, and UV Natural Sport. Old sunscreens can separate and burn your skin so make sure you buy a new one before you head out to your Surf Camp in Sayulita or Punta Mita!

We do not recommend Coppertone, Bullfrog, or most Banana Boat products due to their poor quality. Also, whilst buying sunscreens, remember that SPF 70 can be the same as SPF 30 and any greater SPF is really just a marketing scam. For the nights, you should also keep an insect repellent. Up to 20 or 30 % DEET should be fine, after all, if your surf camp is in Punta Mita, you’ll be staying right next to the tropical Mexican jungle!

Packing the Surf Gear

Surfing for beginners in Sayulita can be tough because of the rough terrain of the surf area in some areas, make sure you bring the correct gear such as… Surfing for beginners in Sayulita can be tough because of the rough terrain of the surf area in some areas, make sure you bring the correct gear such as…

While essentials like surfboards will be available for you at the camp, do make sure you pack your surfing gear that will prevent any rashes from surfing.

Surf shorts provide more protection from the sun and the surfboard compared to regular shorts. Also, carrying a rash guard, which is an athletic shirt made of spandex and nylon or polyester is great.

Rash guards are most often worn in surfing when the weather is too warm for a wetsuit. It also prevents wax-based chafing from sliding on and off of the surfboard. The board’s wax can accumulate sand from the beach which is the reason for the rashes.

Packing the Optional Surfing Gear

Surfing for beginners in Sayulita can be tough because of the rough terrain of the surf area in some areas. You’ll find sand as well as rocks, so protecting your feet from getting scraped is essential, especially in the beginning when you are adjusting to the new feeling. So, surf booties are the way to go if you want to avoid cuts and grazes. However, make sure they fit snugly in the store as they stretch in the water.

You would also want to keep 100 % lycra or spandex running or swimming pants for keeping your legs from getting sunburnt. If you put sunscreen on the back of your legs, it might make the board slippery, therefore the swimming pants will greatly help in securing yourself on the board as well as preventing sunburns and rashes.

While you might not look quite as “cool”, you’ll feel much cooler after day three when you are the only one without a sunburn ;).

Summing it Up

Here’s your backpack checklist for surfing in La Lancha, Sayulita, or Punta de Mita. Here’s your backpack checklist for surfing in La Lancha, Sayulita, or Punta de Mita.

There is a lot to do when you are in Mexico, surfing in La Lancha, Sayulita, or Punta de Mita. This includes getting into the water, chilling at the beach, and going for challenging waves that will ensure that release of adrenaline and endorphins, making you feel, oh so alive!!

Even though there are a lot of amenities and facilities available at the Surf Camp in Sayulita, you will need to bring in some essentials, so you are equipped to dive in as soon as you get here!

Yep, you guessed it, we’ve gone one step further and created a printable packing list for your surf trip!

Getting Tubed is a “PARADISIACAL EXPERIENCE” only Surfers know

Surfing In Punta Mita 2022

Surfer getting barreled in a big wave
Paradisiacal, heavenly, and angels seemingly in chorus; this is how surfers describe the experience of being in a tube. Since getting tubed is an experience only known to surfers, let us mesmerize you with a string of words woven together that capture the beauty of the moment from Javier Chavez, the owner and founder of WildMex Surf & Adventure:

“Getting tubed is that ephemeral moment when one gets engulfed in the water. The feeling that the giant of a wave can wipe you out with one wrong move gives an adrenaline rush that adventurous people yearn for.

The view, if only cameras could capture the entire beauty of the barrel! A blend of blues, greens, and the sandy browns moving all at once, yet seemingly not at all.

The silence is the virtue of the barrel, yet the auditory experience of the water is an encounter that is rightly termed as PARADISIACAL! – The longing for this transcendent to never end but concurrently being mesmerized by the light at the end of the barrel is an incomparable feeling.”

Are you still reading? This means you are awe-struck by just the string of words that describe the transcendent experience. Wonder what it would be like to actually experience getting tubed? Read on to find how you can catch your first tube surfing in Punta Mita this 2022.

What Does It Mean ‘Getting Tubed’?

Surfer getting tubed in a big wave
Getting tubed or barreled means that a surfer finds safety amidst a big wave. There is a dredging feeling that it might break upon itself and a possibility that you’d get trapped between the lip and the wall of the water, which is how you get tubed.

However, there is a technique to do this successfully. Surfers spend a lot of time waiting for the perfect moment to get barreled.

Simultaneously, it takes a lot of skill to maintain balance within a barrel; one wrong move and the wave crashes on you, leaving you amongst the heavy white wash with your surfboard out of control.

So, what’s the best way, place and time to get tubed and surf in Punta Mita?

The Surfing Scene Around Punta Mita

Point of view of a surfer catching a barrel from inside the wave.

Mexico is home to some of the most incredible surfing spots in the world, with beaches like Sayulita and Punta Mita amongst some of the popular spots for surfers, (with good reason!)

Winter is the best time to surf in Punta Mita. From November to March, with surfing in Punta Mita being an experience of a lifetime. You’ll catch slow peeling waves on smaller swells to giant and medium barreling waves that can go up to 8ft or more on bigger ones.

The summer season at Punta Mita gets more consistent swells, but you can expect just about anything in winter, and that’s a true adventure as a surfer, right?

And if you are lucky enough, you can catch those rare 5-6 waves a season swells that will mark one of the most tremendous experiences of your life!

Tips For Catching Your First Barrel

Learn how to catch your first barrel with surf camps in Punta Mita for intermediate-advanced surfers here.

Learning to Surf in Punta Mita as an intermediate or an occasional surfer is also a great experience. This is because you get ISA certified instructors, pro surfboards, and a remarkable experience at the WildMex headquarters.

Surf lessons in Punta Mita can equip you with the skills you need to catch your first tube. And boy, you can bet that the first time you catch your first barrel will be unforgettable!

Here are some of the tips you’ll get to learn at our surf camps…

Surf Camps in Punta Mita

Man taking surf lesson in Nayarit Mexico at Wildmex

The holy grail of surfing is getting tubed. Registering for a Surf Camp in Punta Mita with WildMex can be the first step in getting this experience. If you are an intermediate or even the experienced but-out-of-touch kind, registering for a surf camp can be a great way to catch the wintertime barrels at Punta Mita.

Building Confidence When Surfing In Punta Mita

What our surf camps in Punta Mita will do is build your confidence! More often than not, people close their eyes in their first barrel, where they lose out on the best of the experience.

You’ll learn to build your confidence by being comfortable, learning how to safely fall away from your surfboard. The trick is to be confident yet cautious when entering the barrel. Our  ISA certified instructors will teach you just that.

Picking the Right Board

One secret that our surf camp will teach you is picking the right board. Finding barrels on a longboard is challenging. Therefore, surfing on a shortboard is the key to getting the barrel right.

First things first, it fits right in the confines of the barrel. Secondly, it is much easier to control the direction and speed, which are key components to succeeding the barrel.

Learning to Surf in Punta Mita as an intermediate or an occasional surfer with one of our ISA certified instructors is a great way to learn how to catch your first barrel.

Even when surfing Punta Mita in the winter season, catching that perfect barrel requires patience. Till then, why not polish up your surf until that seasonal rare barrel comes that you’ll get to treasure for a lifetime?

Finding The Right Line

When you’re learning how to get tubed, the hardest part is judging whether a wave will break or not. And this ability comes in due time.

Put simply, the more you surf, the better your judgement becomes on how waves break, and so, the easier it becomes to position yourself to catch that barrel!

Stalling The Right Way

Stalling your board the right way to get barreled is the one technique you WILL need to learn. The easiest way is to apply pressure onto your rear foot that diminishes your speed just right to get the barrel.

Another way is to drag one or both of your hands in the face of the wave to slow down.

There are also some trickier approaches that pro surfers use, which you may also get the chance to learn either at a surf camp or within an intermediate-advanced surf lesson in Punta Mita – just ask your instructor!

All in all, getting barreled is an experience that one cannot weave into words. And once you get the hang of it, you will never get enough of it!

Tubing Till The End

Wave tube in Mexico

Once you’re in the tube, the rush of adrenaline and fear is likely to get you to misstep or close your eyes. Don’t make that mistake!

You’ll end up getting crushed by the wave, or you’ll miss out on the epic wave riding experience.

While soaking up the visuals and audio of the tube, keep your eye on the prize, the end of the tunnel, and get out a champ’!

So, what are you waiting for? The best time to surf in Punta Mita is right NOW, and trust us, you don’t want to miss out on your moment.

Whether you’re going for a surf day or fancy a picnic at the beach with the kids, both would be a suitable half day or full day out. (It’s good to keep in mind that there are no restaurants, bars or beach chairs at Lancha, so make sure that you bring some sunscreen, water, snacks and sunshade!)

(If you are wondering if teens can surf on point breaks in the area, why not check out this video from a family who came to visit us in 2019!)

When Surfing in Sayulita & Punta Mita – It Is Important To Be Aware Of 2 Things:

wetsuit top

  • Surf EtiquetteThe water at the Sayulita and Punta Mita area can be “chilly” from End of December till end of April, kids and smaller people are more sensitive to cold water, so, if you are visiting us during those dates, and plan on having the little ones spending some time in the water, make sure to bring a spring suit, or at least a wetsuit top for the, trust me, it will make a great difference
  • Everybody that goes out on a surf break, no matter their age or ability level, most respect Surfing Etiquette, this helps everyone be safe out there and have a great time. Please, if you feel like your teen is ready for the “grown-up waves” make sure first that they are a capable surfer and thoroughly understand the correct surfing etiquette.
If this is not the case, or you’re unsure, we would recommend hiring one of our certified surf instructors to accompany you or your teen to the break, where you can enjoy a personal surf session including inside local knowledge of the wave as well as tips on how to improve your surfing ability!

Check out this super helpful page from our Friends at Swell Surf Camp with some valuable info on Surf Etiquette!

Safety For Yourself And Your Belongings Whilst Surfing Sayulita, Punta Mita And Other Local Breaks:

Ok, so, this is a really important subject and one that can transform your amazing Surf & Holiday in Sayulita from a great memory, to, “it was great but…”, in a second. Sadly, here in Mexico, it happens more often than we would like!

Even though not great, it should be comforting that 99.9% of the crime we get in the area is petty theft, and the .1% left is related to alcohol and drugs (people out partying, getting intoxicated and taking some not-so-smart decisions).

not at Burros.

Leave your valuables at your accommodation inside the safe, or if you are renting boards or taking coached sessions at any surf school, ask them to provide a safe storage location. At Wildmex we offer storage boxes for your bags, clothes and other such items at both our Sayulita and Punta Mita surfboard rental shop.

If you want to take pictures, we recommend that you do not leave your phone or camera unattended at the beach, if you are taking a surf lesson or coached surf session, we offer professional surf photography and can provide you with high-quality pictures or videos without risking your phone/camera, allowing you the peace of mind whilst enjoying your time in the water or at the beach.

There are particular locations, especially Sayulita, where “sandal theft” (yes you read right) – is a real thing. So sadly, if you are going surfing in Sayulita (or elsewhere) and if you expect to see your sandals again, we recommend that you leave them in a safe place, not at the beach. (Everyone walks barefoot all over town in Sayulita, so you won’t feel out of place!)

Staying Safe In Sayulita On Your Family Holiday – Staying One Step Ahead Of Thieves In Your Rented Accommodation

How to Keep Your Valuables Safe at the Beach. As locals, we like to offer our guests the inside knowledge to help keep you and your family safe during your vacation. Please be aware of this one situation which has been known to happen (mostly with private houses or apartments booked through booking sites) in the local area…

You arrive at your accommodation, after a long day of traveling, waking up at 4 am, connecting flights, eating airport food, not drinking enough water, etc. and you get into your Airbnb or Sayulita Life rental…

Check-ins in the area mostly happen on Saturday and Sundays, and once you do check in, you figure out, you’re starving! You leave the bags and belongings lying around and head out for dinner in the local town, only to come back a few hours later and find out your laptop, phone, ipad, Kindle, passport, etc. are all gone.

Unfortunately, this is a ritual that happens at many private rentals in the area, and has nothing to do with the owners, it is just thieves that have figured out check-in dates, tourist behavior (sorry guys, you are not that unique) and most importantly, how to effortlessly break-in into certain properties, making it a super simple and profitable way for them to make some easy and fast cash.

The police, the property owners and even the locals are coming together to put a stop to this kind of crime in Sayulita, and so far have been really successful, however, it still happens, and visitors being informed ahead of time can help us put an extra prevention layer for this not to happen.

So please, no matter how tired, hungry or intoxicated you are, leave your valuables in the safe before leaving your rental property!

Thanks for helping us all keep Sayulita, San Pancho and Punta Mita safe!

Surf & Holiday in Sayulita & Punta Mita – Which Boards Are Suitable For The Waves In The Area?

Most surf breaks in the area are suitable for Longboards, or Fish-Style shortboards with generous volume and a relatively wide outline.

There are some surf breaks that are suitable for performance shortboards, like San Pancho, Veneros and the Cove most of the time, however, in our experience, you will catch more waves and have a better time during most surf sessions in the area on a board designed for mellower waves.

For those of you who have limited experience with surfing and surfboards, here are some examples of boards that could be suitable for the area.

Longboards

firewire the gemFirewire, The Gem: Ideal performance longboard for small and mid-sized mellow waves. This board is great if you want to catch a ton of waves! The slick design on this board makes it ride really smooth and makes the wave easy to catch. This would be a great surfboard choice for a small and medium size day at La Lancha.

Walden Mega MagicWalden Mega Magic: We love this board! It has a vast amount of volume, can paddle into virtually anything, and its sharp back rails help generate good speed after a decent bottom turn. Walden Mega Magic are also really dynamic boards – people with different waves and ability levels can all ride them whilst having a great time in the water. This board would be great for a small day surfing Sayulita’s point break.

Shortboards

Firewire SeaSide orange colorThe last 5 years have seen a revolution on the shortboard design, boards now come in multiple shapes and materials, and different fin setups, this gives each model a special character, and, when teamed with a surfer, creates an even more unique style for every rider on every break. Our favorites are:

Firewire SeaSide: Wildmex customers love this board! It’s been known to catch waves like crazy and performs well, even on sharper turns. Make sure to rent it out with its intended fins, (the Machado Keel Fin) 50% of the smooth feeling related to this board, comes from these fins! You would be happy with this board at any break in the area with chest high waves, perhaps Burros or El Paredon would be the best suited. This would also be a great option for the Cove and El Faro on decent days.

Surf Board Rental Punta Mita

Firewire Baked Potato: The name might sound funny, but if you are looking to ride a shortboard when everyone else is riding a longboard, this is your go-to board. Try it out on a quad fin setup and you won’t be disappointed. Ride this board on small to medium days at La Lancha or even a decent day at Stinkys or El Anclote.

If you would like to rent one of these boards (or another) head to our rentals page here. If you require any more info on the area’s surf breaks, swells, tides and the right wind for each one, how to get to them, where to park, best times to surf in Sayulita, Punta Mita etc. go to our Sayulita and Punta Mita Surf Break Map and General info

How Do I Get To Sayulita, Punta Mita and San Pancho from Puerto Vallarta Airport?

  • The nearest airport is (PVR) – Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, located in Puerto Vallarta. Once there, rental cars and taxis are easy to find just outside of the airport exit. Expect to pay between 300 – 500 pesos. Buses, however, are just as convenient and far less expensive. Located just left of the airport exit and across the bridge crossing the main highway, a bus stop can be found which will take you to Punta Mita, Sayulita or San Pancho for 100 pesos or less ( $5 usd approx). Buses are green and white, called Compostela, and clearly display their destinations on the front window.
  • Airports have the worst exchange rates, so we recommend exchanging just enough for transportation and then using an ATM or currency exchange once you arrive at your destination.
  • There is also a better exchange rate at the ATMs in Bucerias. You can take a bus there from Sayulita for close to $2.00 USD/ $40 pesos.
  • Naturally, if you aren’t from a Spanish speaking country, we would recommend practicing basics like asking ‘Are you going to [destination]?’ ¿Vas a [destination]? or ‘How much does it cost?’ ¿Cuanto cuesta? in Spanish.

What Are The Waves Like In Sayulita and Surrounding Areas?

  • Surfing in Sayulita

Learning to surf in Sayulita is the perfect spot as it is famous for its super fun longboard waves. It is best to surf here at mid-tide, working best with a southwest swell direction. Typically, expect a crowded line-up.

Best Time To Surf Sayulita

The far-left break nearest the point is great for first-day beginners to learn the basics of surfing. There is no face (steepness of the wave) on the waves on this side. They instantly break into mushy white water; making it perfect for simply learning to get comfortable on the board with paddling and standing up. This break has a sandy bottom, so there is no need to worry about scraping your feet on rocks or reef.

The middle break is the most popular and great for intermediate surfers. You will also find advanced surfers surfing here. It is just left to the river mouth, but in the winter season, it is not much of a river anymore. It is a peeling right-hand wave (breaks to the right, consistently. Great for the regular-footed surfers!). There is a nice face to this wave that is usually knee to waist high range on most days. Occasionally there will be bigger days in the chest to head high range. Here, the peak breaks right on top of a reef. You have to be super careful at low tide because there are many sea urchins in the winter season; when there is no water running through the river mouth to wash them all away. The waves here roll slowly, giving you time to stand up and the long face provides ample opportunity to ride the wave!

The far-right break is the least popular break but it can be super fun if you have a good grasp on surfing! It is just to the right of the river mouth. The wave almost mirrors the middle break, giving you a peeling left hand wave; it does break a bit faster, making it more of a challenge to surf this wave. It breaks on top of rocks, so do be careful here as well at low tide.

Conveniently, we offer high-grade surfboard rental in Sayulita with over 300+ high-quality surfboards, located just 30 seconds from the main beach. Find us here

  • Surfing in San Pancho

professional surferSan Pancho is a beach break with steep waves, ideal for short boarding and advanced surfers. It gets crowded here, in the evening mainly.

There is one long break here, breaking with both lefts and rights. The river mouth runs through the middle of the break. The waves here break a bit close to shore so you must be cautious during low tide. This wave can break nicely at all tide levels. The waves are steep and break quickly. Sometimes you can find lengthy waves here, but usually, they are short and there is not much opportunity for a lot of ride time on the faces of these waves. Buuuut the drop in here is super fun!

  • Surfing in Punta Mita (La Lancha)

La Lancha is a beautiful, secluded longboard break. Each break here has a fat mushy wave that’s super long. You will see surfers of all levels here. There are rights and lefts, depending on the break you are at. There is plenty of space to spread out here. It really only gets a crowd on the weekends (for the most part). There are rocks here – so be careful at all breaks during low tide. It breaks best with a north swell direction.

Surf Lessons In Punta MitaThe right side breaks just right of the lagoon. When there is a lot of rain the lagoon connects to the ocean. This side breaks mainly to the right and the waves are usually long with a fat, gently sloped face. There is a lot of flat rock on this side that spans a long distance so be careful at low tide.

The middle break is usually the spot to surf left-hand waves. It mirrors the right side with the same fat, gently sloped face. There are clusters of rocks on this side close to shore and also in the lineup, be careful at low tide.

The far left side can be a bit more advanced on the big days than the other side. It breaks to the right and to the left – so be careful when taking lefts because it is rocky on the left side. The wave comes in at an angle, there is more face on the right side of the wave, but there is a quicker drop when you take the left side of the wave. This side can be super fun on the smaller days because it holds enough power to almost always break nicely.

To get to the far left side you have to pass by a rock structure that juts out close to the shoreline. The wave breaks right in front of the resort there with the white beach chairs in front.

Best Time To Surf In Sayulita? – What Time Of The Year Are The Waves Best?

  • Winter season is when the bigger swells come in but overall you can find waves here all year long!
  • The swells in the area generally range from 2 to 4 feet (.6 to 1.2 meters).

What Is The Weather Like in Sayulita & Surrounding During Different Times Of The Year?

  • The weather in Nayarit is exceptional most of the year. Rivera Nayarit enjoys a mild tropical climate with a yearly average temperature of a comfortable 77° F (25 ºC).
  • Summer in Riviera Nayarit can be a bit warm for some, with average highs in the 90’s.
  • The rainy season comes in late June and lasts until early November. During the rainy season, the afternoon brings showers and relief from the summer heat. Occasional thunderstorms roll through in late summer providing an evening’s entertainment without interfering with daytime vacation activities.

How Do I Get To The Waves!

  • WildMex’s office in Sayulita is conveniently placed within a 1-minute walk from the main beach break. If you’d prefer to try out the waves at the more secluded beach of La Lancha, we offer shuttles from our location in Sayulita to our location at La Lancha every day at 8:00am, 11:00am, or 2:00pm. Check out further details here!

Where should I stay?

Where you choose to stay will definitely depend on your preferences:

  • Sayulita, about 45 minutes northwest of Puerto Vallarta, is known for consistent surf breaks and authentic local craftsmanship. Once a sleepy fishing town, Sayulita has grown exponentially in recent years and has become a popular tourist destination featuring many great Airbnb options, safe and reasonably priced hostels (such as Selina or La Redonda), and comfortable hotels along the north-facing beach. Sayulita has a good variety of restaurants, bars, and cafes in the area. If late-night noise might be an issue for you or your family, consider looking for housing outside of Sayulita’s main plaza area.
  • Punta Mita is a small town on the peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta. The peninsula is privately owned by Four Seasons which offers all-inclusive resort stays, but there are also plenty of options for Airbnb’s closer to town. Punta Mita is more calm and quiet than Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta, offering plenty of options for boat tours and surf lessons.
  • San Pancho is known as the cultural heart of Nayarit, managing to have preserved its rural essence and the authenticity of a picturesque Mexican beach town. With plenty of excellent restaurants and a thriving local music scene, San Pancho is a great place to escape the noise of Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta.

Is It Safe For Women in Sayulita and Surrounding Areas?

These are very safe destinations overall. Take caution by avoiding the beach in the night and taking the well-lit routes through town to get home.

Who Should Not Come?

People who don’t enjoy warm sunshine, warm ocean water, and palm-fringed ocean beaches wrapped in a lush cloak of verdant jungle.

Hey adventurers,

In January 2021 I traveled from Seattle to Sayulita to surf and dig mountain bike trails with WildMex.

At the time, the COVID-19 pandemic concerned me for two reasons. 1. I didn't want to accidentally contract the virus in Seattle and bring it to a small community on my way in. 2. While I was in Sayulita, the US government announced new COVID test requirements that I thought might make it hard to travel home.

Managing these 2 risks turned out to be very easy.

  1. Before leaving Seattle, I tested negative for COVID. While traveling I wore a mask, washed my hands often, and showed no new symptoms. In Sayulita, I wore a mask in grocery stores and slept in a tent to reduce indoor contact. The tent was probably unnecessary :). Many of my friends rented houses or stayed in local hostels without issues.A week before my departure, I booked an appointment online for an
  2. Antigen test from the Punta Mita Hospital. Punta Mita is a 20 minute shuttle ride from Sayulita, and the facilities were very clean and safe. The staff let me wait outdoors for my appointment and then quickly performed the nose swab in a sterile room. I received results later that evening by email and flew home two days later with no issues, sharing the lab results via PDF on my phone at the Puerto Vallarta airport.

I'm still not sure if it's very responsible to travel internationally right now, but if you want to visit Sayulita, I definitely recommend communicating with WildMex. They helped me find the Punta Mita hospital and travel around the area in what I felt like was a relatively low risk way.

Safe adventures friends,

Nathan, Seattle, 28

January 15th, 2021
Lets face it, no matter where in the world you live, what language you speak or how old you are, the last 10-12 months have probably changed how you live, study, travel, exercise and socialize.

The new regulations announced this week are no exception. Soon both the US CDC and Canadian Minister of Transportation will require a negative COVID-19 test to travel into their respective countries. This policy will begin on January 26, 2021 for Americans, and it began on January 7, 2021 Canadians.

The change may cause some visitors to second guess their visit to Wildmex’s Tropical Coastal Paradise, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Punta de Mita. They may worry it will be too complicated, expensive, or inconvenient to get a Negative Covid Test for their return home.

At Wildmex, we understand the concern of our potential guest. To help them, we are currently planning a simple, hassle free and inexpensive process to ensure our visitors can feel secure planning and enjoying their holidays. We want to make getting tested easy so you can get home safely.

We will provide another update here soon. Meanwhile, hold on tight. I am hopeful we have met the hardest challenges already, and that we are on a path to a healthier tomorrow.
