Riding the Waves: Surfing Puerto Vallarta During Hurricane Season

Riding the Waves: Surfing Puerto Vallarta During Hurricane Season

If you’ve ever wondered if you can surf in Puerto Vallarta during hurricane season, the answer is a resounding yes. This time of year, from September to October, the coastline of Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas transforms into a haven for surfers. While the name might sound intimidating, the waves brought by hurricanes can offer some of the best conditions for those who know where to go. In this guide, I'll walk you through some of the most underrated surf spots in the area. Whether you’re chasing the thrill of the next big wave or simply want to experience the unique vibe of surfing in Puerto Vallarta, these beaches are worth checking out.

The Surf Spots to Explore:

Playa Los Muertos

Playa Los Muertos: Located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta, Playa Los Muertos might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing. But during hurricane season, the beach offers surprisingly fun waves. The best part? You’re right in the middle of the action, so after a good session, you can easily grab a bite or enjoy the local scene. It's a great spot to mix surfing with the rich culture of Puerto Vallarta.

Playa El Holy

Playa El Holy: If you’re looking for a more secluded experience, Playa El Holy is your spot. This spot really comes to life when the swells pick up. The waves here during hurricane season are clean and challenging, making it a favorite for those who appreciate a good ride without the crowds. The peaceful surroundings only add to the appeal, making it a perfect getaway for surfers who like to keep things low-key.

Playa El Tizate

Playa El Tizate: North of La Cruz, Playa El Tizate offers a more laid-back atmosphere but still packs a punch during hurricane season. The waves here can be powerful and consistent, giving you a solid surf session without the hustle of more crowded spots. It’s a spot where you can enjoy a more tranquil environment while still catching some great waves.

Playa Veneros

Playa Veneros: Playa Veneros is a spot that doesn’t get much attention, but it’s one you don’t want to miss. When the hurricanes roll in, the waves here get longer and more exciting, making it an ideal place to refine your technique. It’s not as busy as some of the other spots, which means you’ll have plenty of room to surf without feeling crowded. The natural beauty of the area only enhances the experience.

Playa La Lancha

Playa La Lancha: A favorite among locals, Playa La Lancha is known for its consistency. During hurricane season, the swells here can be just what you’re looking for. This spot is popular, but not overly crowded, making it a great place to meet fellow surfers and share some waves. The combination of reliable waves and beautiful surroundings makes it a must-visit when you’re in the area.

Playa San Pancho

Playa San Pancho: Playa San Pancho is another spot that really shines during hurricane season. Known for its strong currents and big waves, it’s a challenge even for experienced surfers. But if you’re up for it, the rewards are worth it. The waves here are powerful, and the laid-back town of San Pancho offers a great place to unwind after a long day in the water.

Staying Safe: While surfing in Puerto Vallarta during hurricane season can be incredible, safety should always be a priority. Check local surf reports before heading out, and never surf alone. The conditions can change rapidly, so it’s essential to stay aware and prepared. If you’re looking for guided surf sessions or just want some advice, Wildmex Surf and Adventure is here to help. We know these spots inside and out, and we’re always happy to share tips or even join you in the water.

Hurricane season in Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas isn’t just about wild weather; it’s about discovering some of the most thrilling surf spots in Puerto Vallarta. With places like Playa Los Muertos, Playa El Holy, and Playa La Lancha offering incredible waves, this is the time to get out there and explore. So, whether you’re an experienced surfer or just getting started, grab your board and let’s see what the hurricane season has to offer. The waves are calling, are you ready to answer?

The Ultimate Guide to Buying a Second-Hand Surfboard: Pros, Cons, and Tips

At WildMex Surf and Adventure, we understand that choosing the right surfboard is an exciting yet sometimes challenging decision. Buying a second-hand surfboard can be a great option, if you know what to look for. In this guide, we explain the benefits of buying a second-hand surfboard and give you practical tips to make sure your purchase is a success.

Why Buy a Second-Hand Surfboard?

Save Money

  • Lower Price: Second-hand surf boards are usually much cheaper than new ones, letting you get into surfing or adding a board to your Quiver without spending a lot of money.
  • Opportunity to experiment: If you want to try something new, like a shorter board or a different shape, you can always try with a used board. That way, if you do not like it, or you got the size wrong, you can always flip it for less of a loss, since used surfboards devaluate slower than new ones.

Sustainability

  • Reuse Resources: By buying a second-hand board, you help reduce the environmental impact of producing new boards.
  • Eco-Friendly: You promote a culture of recycling and reusing within the surfing community.

Key Tips for Buying process

To ensure you make the right choice, follow these tips:

Inspect the Board Thoroughly:

  • Cracks and Dents: Examine the surface for cracks, dings, or previous repairs. Minor surface damage can be okay but avoid boards with structural damage.
  • Delamination: Make sure the board’s outer layer isn’t separating from the inner foam, as this affects performance and will keep on getting worse unless fixed through time.

Check the Weight

  • Water Absorption: A board that has absorbed water will be heavier and less buoyant. Weight the board, does it feel heavier than it should? Does the board feel “weird” when you manipulate it in the air, kind of like it tends to gain more momentum or “swing weight” from one side than the other? It might be good to have a friend that has more experience surfing with you to help you through this process, since “feeling” when a board has taken weight, or is heavy on certain sections might take lots of previous experience manipulating surfboards and getting a feeling for it

Inspect the Fins and Fin Boxes:

  • Fin Condition: Ensure the fins are in good condition and securely attached. Note, lots of boards get sold without the fins since fins tend to change with the surfer preferences and in some budget board scenario, can cost just as much as the surfboard.
  • Fin Boxes: Check that the fin boxes are undamaged (no cracks) and hold the fins securely. Check the screws on them, make sure the fins can be taken off by loosening the screws and once they are put on and the screws are tightened, they won't wobble around

Test the Board:

  • Performance in Water: If possible, test the board in the water to make sure it feels right and meets your basic expectations like paddling characteristics, floatation and overall performance.

Buying a second-hand surfboard can be a great way to get started with surfing or to add a new board to your collection without spending too much. With proper inspection and a bit of research, you can find a board that suits your needs and surfing style.

You’ll be skimming the waves like Poseidon, we promise.

Ready to BRUSH UP on Day 5? Scroll down to see what’s on the menu.

Can YOU handle the surf? Let’s do this!

The Final Wave Selection Lowdown

How to AVOID common surfing mistakes!

There are some common themes throughout the Wild Mex surf lessons, and binary wave selection is one you just can’t ignore.

On Day 5 of the course, we want YOU to actively think, ‘Can I Catch This Wave?’ It’s time for you to take your coastal destiny into your hands–go forth and grasp that gorgeous surf!

Of course, we’ll rehash the common mistakes you make as a beginner surfer to keep them fresh in your mind. However, with four prior surf sessions under your belt, you’ll be able to answer these important questions yourself.

Common surfing mistakes happen! But at this point, most of our surfers are confident with binary wave selection. Yup, we’re talking about YOU!

When you reach Day 5, getting dunked and missing potential waves will be a thing of the past. Byeeeee, baby!

Beginner To Intermediate - Catch Waves Like A Pro

BEGONE to all mistakes you make as a beginner surfer!

Now you’ve honed your dynamic wave selection skills, it’s time to think about moving from beginner skills to intermediate surfing. This might sound a li’l scary, but we KNOW you can handle it!

Forget considering if you can catch the wave (psst, you can!). It’s time to ask yourself, ‘Where Do I Need To Be In Order To Catch This Wave?’ We’re upping the stakes, but you already have the knowledge to play!

Here, we’re all about mastering your wave reading. No crystal ball is needed to predict where waves will break! Picking the right location - surfline is a tool you already know. We’re just putting all the steps together!

After you’ve read the room (AKA wave), we help you locate the spot with the longest potential ride. Or, as our pirate friends say, ‘X Marks The Spot.’ *Arghhhh*.

Common Surfing Mistakes, Who?

Now you’re picking the right location - surfline and combining binary wave selection, you’re pretty much ready to single-handedly take on the ocean.

So, why stop here?

As you keep catching waves, we’ll help you add more complex maneuvers and skills into the mix. Learning to surf in Mexico never stops. There’s always a new bag of tricks to explore. And boy, our professional Wild Mex team has a LOT up their wetsuit sleeves.

Being an eternal student is so our thing.

Any time in the water is time spent well. Yeeew!

Saving Energy While Learning To Surf In Mexico

Learn to catch waves with the BEST technique!

Surf Camp in Punta Mita is all about adrenaline and that rush only surfing can give! So, why are we saving energy??

Staying still and surfing might seem incompatible, but hear us out…

When you know where to position yourself, which paddling technique to use, and which waves are actually worth catching, you save much more energy. Why? Well, this gives you even more *oomph* to catch those worthwhile waves.

No one wants to clock the perfect wave but be too tired to grasp it. That’s a complete vibe kill.

Using up your energy waaay too quickly is a common mistake you make as a beginner surfer. However, we’re on hand to remind you that not every wave is worth YOUR time.

Be selective in yo’ battles.

Catch Waves With Ease

Catch waves with SPECTACULAR surfing hosts!

Finally, you get to spend Day 5 of surf camp in Punta Mita practising your craft.

Uh-huh, we give YOU the floor.

On the last day, we turn the tables and ask YOU what you want to work on. Identifying which skills you need to work on is essential, and we’re here to help you strengthen your knowledge.

Wanna work on picking the right location - surfline? You got it! Prefer fixing the common mistakes you make as a beginner surfer? We’re cool with that! Want to know how to properly wax your board? Maybe not the best time… but that’s important, too!

Once you nail those pesky hiccups, you’ll be the best on the beach.

Now, let’s put those surfing fundamentals to work–go!

Day 5 Surf Camp In Punta Mita Wrap-Up

Surfing Rules & Etiquette: What’s It All About?

TOP surfers know the surfing rules & etiquette by HEART!

We know, we know, it probably seems like surfing rules & etiquette is one of our top 10 favorite phrases. There IS a method to our madness, though!

Before we jump back into the crystal clear Punta Mita waters, Day 4 starts with a debrief on all you need to know about safety and etiquette—think of these as the basic rules of surfing. Without them, you might end up in a SPLASH, CRASH AND PUMMEL!

This handy talk ensures YOU know how to keep yourself and others safe, all while maintaining chill vibes in the water. After all, who wants to be surfing in a tense space??

Imagine you’re in line at your fave store… If someone jumped the queue, the tranquilo mood would be gone in seconds, right? Everyone in the store would be bummed, pushed back, and wouldn’t the mood just fall flat?

You wouldn’t do it in the store, so why would you do it in the ocean? Exactly!

Don’t stress! It happens to everyone once or twice. Buuut, our expert team is here to help you navigate the mistakes you make as a beginner surfer. That’s what Day 4 is ALLL about!

Thanks, WildMex pros!

General Rule: Picking The Right Location - Surfline

Learning to surf in Mexico isn’t a chore! Faaar from it.

These safety issues can be resolved with one general rule: picking the right location - Surfline. Yup, it’s that simple! Harmonious surfing comes down to getting in the right position and waiting your turn.

Surfers should always give priority to the surfer with the longest potential ride.

Sound like a foreign language? Let’s decode it!

The surfer closest to the wave’s peak (most powerful section) always gets the right of way. Why? Because they’ll get the best enjoyment and momentum out of the wave!

Awesome—always give priority to the longest ride.

But, how do YOU get yourself there? That’s one for our professional surfers to show you in person at the beach!

What Are The Most Common Surfing Mistakes?

We talk about common surfing mistakes A LOT on Day 4, but do you know what we’re really talking about?

No stress if you don’t!

Did you know you actually have to learn about mistakes you make as a beginner surfer BEFORE you can correct them? Uh-huh! We teach you the complete DOs and DON’Ts to keep you on top surfin’ form 24/7.

During Day 4, we give YOU the low down on dropping in too early, not waiting for your turn in the Surfline, and paddling wide to ensure you stay out of other surfer’s way. Polite surfing is the best surfing—no wave stealin’ here!

The basic rules of surfing will be on the tip of your tongue in no time! All you gotta do is turn up and enjoy.

Cowabunga!

Surfing Rules & Etiquette: Keepin’ The Tension Low

Our beginner’s guide to surf safety & surf etiquette is not only here for your benefit.

No, no, no.

We’re here to help EVERY surfer by teaching you how to keep the tension low in the water. As we touched on before, cutting the line can create a bad mood all around. If you’re unlucky, you might bump into some moody surfers. Oh no.

So, how do you keep it cool?

Cutting the tension involves learning to make eye contact with other surfers, using hand signals, and, most importantly apologizing if you slip up—trust us, it happens!

But hey, we’re a judgment-free zone!
