from road biking in punta mita to surf lessons in la lancha

Road Biking In Punta Mita on The Old La Cruz Highway

So you’ve got 3 days in Sayulita and Punta Mita and you’re wondering how to enjoy it to the very fullest?

At this point you already know Sayulita is a town well-known for its quirky, hippy-culture, chilled beaches, diverse food scene and laid-way-back surfer vibe – heck, that’s why you’re here right?

But what more has it got to offer in terms of adventure and meaningful experience?

Well, hold on to your saddle, because us locals down at Wildmex are about to spill the beans on this colourful, “pueblo magico” and the surrounding more ‘undiscovered’ areas that shine just as brightly when it comes to true adventure!

From road biking in Punta Mita to surf lessons in La Lancha, if you’ve got 3 days for raw adventure and wanna have a hella’ good time, here are some activities in Sayulita we recommend for you and your crew…

DAY 1: WILD BEACH DAY & SURFING AT LA LANCHA

The best time to surf Punta Mita? Sunset ofc! It’s safe to say that it doesn’t get much better than surfing La Lancha – a beginners, intermediates and longboarders utopia! A never-never land just 25 minutes from Sayulita, constructed of white sand, warm teal waters and consistent waves with several peaks that break 365 days of the year – oh boy! This unspoilt beach offers a uniquely raw adventure day out, with no bars or restaurants, sunbeds or locals selling tacos or margaritas. Whether you come looking for it or not, you’ll for sure leave with an authentically wild and memorable experience that many people miss out on when visiting Sayulita.

As the most consistent break in the area and rarely crowded, whether it’s your first time popping up or you’re a more experienced rider, no doubt that you’ll want to stay in these pristine waters until your arms are just about dropping off at the end of the day!

Surf lessons in La Lancha with certified, local surf coaches at WildmexBring a picnic, plenty-o’ water, ofc your swimmers and grab a board from the nearest surfboard rental location right here. Alternatively drop in at the same location to enquire about surf lessons in La Lancha with certified, local surf coaches!

Be prepared to be surrounded by outstanding nature and wildlife, such as frequenting green turtles who like to pop up to say “hola!” every once in a while!

The best time to surf Punta Mita’s La Lancha beach?  This spot works best with offshore winds from the west. If you can stay until sunset, no matter where the winds are blowing, you’ll be glad you stayed to close the day with rainbow-hued tones and the picturesque illuminated sky.

DAY 2 – ROAD BIKING IN PUNTA MITA ON THE OLD LA CRUZ HIGHWAY

The Riviera Nayarit has nearly 200 miles of magnificent coastline, so why not take the scenic route? We’re talkin’ great views, balmy weather, wind in your hair, flora and fauna, cruising laid-way-back on your road bike on the old La Cruz highway! –  What better way to spend the 2nd day of your trip, cruising through amazingly beautiful landscapes – right?

Road biking in Punta Mita will be an unforgettable introduction to the Riviera Nayarit that you won’t be forgetting anytime soon. This 7.2 kilometres or 5.5 miles stretch of user-friendly, scenic roads makes the perfect spot for adventure-seeking road bikers, providing an opportunity to cycle on some of the best, safest and most scenic roads on the whole of Mexico’s west coast!

It’s possible to do a pleasant there-and-back ride on the old La Cruz road, which goes along the coastline with epic views and some fun rolling hills. You can also opt to do a full circle by going on the old La Cruz road and come back on the new La Cruz – Punta Mita road, which is a little less scenic but a good alternative to coming back the same way.

We recommend that you rent a road bike at this location in Punta Mita where you’ll start your venture solo or alternatively enquire here about a road bike tour with a member of our Wildmex team – equipped with plenty-o’ inside local knowledge that’ll make all the difference to your adventure day out!

Our guides offer support to all levels of riders when road biking in Punta Mita and surrounding areas, whilst our tours include plenty of relaxation and exploration time, beautiful countryside, epic coastline, wonderful wildlife, quaint towns, and amazing riding.

DAY 3 -MARIETAS SNORKELING SAFARI DAY Out

So after a pretty busy 2 days jam-packed full of action, it’s time to take thangs’ eaaaasy!

Day 3 couldn’t be more perfect for embarking on the hidden gem of the area – The Islas Marietas National Park. This outstanding natural beauty offers windows of opportunity for remarkable wildlife viewing, including Whales in winter and Blue

Footed Boobies year-round, not to mention chock-full waters boasting tropical marine life that’ll make you want to dive in headfirst to experience first hand.

Marietas Island tours for families in SayulitaThis half-day snorkelling adventure allows you to explore the magnificence of the Las Islas Marietas – on your own terms. Whether that means soaking up the sun from the boat and intaking some of the most spectacular views in the whole of Mexico or disembarking to secluded beaches and pristine waters to get up close and personal,  snorkelling besides colourful native wildlife species.

Enquire here about our Marietas Island tours in Sayulita – the utmost perfect adventure to close your 3 day trip in Sayulita and Punta Mita in style. This memorable day out is a good option for all ages and fitness levels.

Best time to come? Anytime between December and March – during the humpback whale season!

Surfer catching waves

5 Pro hacks for catching more waves -How-to guide:

Surfing for beginners punta mita & sayulita 2021

Learn to surf in our Sayulita Surf Camp with Wildmex

Ok, so we’ve all been there… 1 hour-long surf sesh aaaand… 1 wave. Heck! Talk about disappointment!

You come out feeling like you’ve done a whole lotta’ floating, drifting and waiting in the wings, and well, not a whole lot of “surfing”.

So what’s really going wrong? How you can catch more waves?
Maybe it’s the crowded lineups, lack of lessons, the wrong equipment or even that negative self-talk that’s knocking your game… Whichever one, here’s our 5 pro hack’s for upping your wave count right now – these top tips have been taken from our certified leading surf coaches down at our Punta Mita & Sayulita Surf Camp’s, so whether you’re an intermediate or beginner surfer, no doubt that implementing these pointers will have an instant positive effect of your surf-game.

Check it out!

TAKE LESSONS

Surfing For Beginners Punta MitaWhen surfing in Sayulita, it’s safe to say that if there is any place to start, it’s here! Many beginners in this area jump straight on a board and start catching the waves, without knowing the basic fundamentals of surfing. Not only can this be frustrating to more experienced surfers who know and follow the rules in the water but it can be dangerous to you and anyone else out there too!

Having an experienced surf coach take you through the learning process is an invaluable experience that you won’t regret. They’ll teach you everything from the basic fundamentals, safety procedures, do’s and don’t and how to read waves, which will undoubtedly skyrocket your learning curve in the water.

Not only will the other surfers recognise that you’ve invested the time in taking lessons and respect you more for doing so but you’ll also catch so many more waves and be confident that you’re doing it the right way.

We offer surfing for beginners in Sayulita and for intermediates too! If you want to up your wave count this is the place to start! Enquire about our epic surf lessons in Sayulita and Punta Mita here.

TRAIN FOR IT

Cardio Training - Surf Camps In Punta Mita with WildmexSo you ant to be a wave wizard? Well, you better train for it.
Believe it or not, it’s all about getting that heart pumping… the more you train (in and out of the water) the better you’ll get at catching waves.

Introducing cardio-vascular training to your routine, such as swimming, running, cycling or brisk walking will help to improve your stamina in the water, ensuring you have enough energy to really pump, gain speed and catch the waves you want.

Going out to train in various conditions, even if the swell is small, can also be one of the best teachers! You’ll learn things such as wave sharing, how to correct your stance, how to generate speed, how to improve your style, how to stay in the power pocket and most importantly, how to read the waves before catch them!

Feeling ready to train for it? Why not join a surf camp in Sayulita for a week and see your performance in the water turn a corner, rapidly! Discover more about our surf camps in Punta Mita and Sayulita right here and make the decision to uplevel your wave count, for good!

BE MINDFUL

Surfing For Beginners In Punta MitaIn surfing, attitude is everything, which means a simple shift towards a mindfulness mentality can change your whole surf game – no really.

Think about it, have you noticed that the second you start taking things a little too seriously, things start going downhill?

Well, not only can this hurt your progression but it’ll lead to disappointing sessions where you’ll feel you’re underachieving and start forgetting the true nature of why you’re really there in the first place – to have fun!

The second you start cutting the negative self-talk, quit beating yourself up and start uplifting the vibe in the water, the sooner you’ll start enjoying more and riding more waves!

Don’t be afraid to spark conversation with other surfers, compliment their waves, share waves and give some away, embrace everything the nature around you has to offer and be grateful for being there. Making a friend or two in the line-up will put you in the perfect position to learn from others, get a go at higher-performing waves and earn some respect in the water.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOARD

Surfboard Rental In Punta Mita With WildmexGive way to priority, paddle hard, bend your knees, lead with your head and fly – right? Sounds like you’ve got the fundamentals down on paper but the reality just isn’t manifesting… Well, ever thought that the board you’re using is a little off the mark?

Not only can riding the wrong surfboard delay your progression but it can also make life a whole lot more difficult when trying to catch a wave…

The first step to surfing success is to be honest with yourself about what you’ll be riding… the type of wave you ride regularly has a lot to do with what board you should choose. So, firstly, make sure you understand what kind of conditions you’re going to be heading out in before any session, you should also take into consideration your experience, ability and fitness level.

Generally speaking, longer, more voluminous boards are easier to paddle but can be tough to get past crashing waves and whitewater, so keep this in mind when selecting your board!

Not sure which shape or style fits you? Come into one of our Wildmex shops here and speak to a member of our team, who’re all experts when it comes to getting you on the right board and catching more waves! We offer surfboard rental in Punta Mita and Sayulita with a selection of over 300 boards to choose from.

WATCH THE WAVES

One of the biggest mistakes “intermediate” and beginner surfers make when surfing in Sayulita is to jump straight into the line-up, without watching the waves first!

You’ll be surprised at how much you can improve your surfing just from watching – from the outside!
First, observe the line-up and the water and ask yourself the following: How often are the sets coming through? What’s the tide doing and will it affect my session? Are there occasional smaller or wider sets that people are missing that I could take advantage of? Where could be a good spot to sit for my ability?
When you start taking the time to ask yourself these questions before a session, instead of rushing straight in, you’ll see that your ability to read the waves and catch them will improve rapidly!

Watch the waves, ask the questions and play the field catching way more waves than before!

So whether it’s jumping into a surf lesson in Sayulita, hanging back 10 minutes longer to watch the waves break, making some new buddies in the line-up or hanging out at one of our surf camps in Punta Mita, putting the above tips into practice (in whichever shape or form) for your next approaching waves, will for sure give you a greater chance at upping that wave count!

If you have any questions or want to enquire about anything mentioned in this blog, reach us here and one of the members of our team will be happy to help out!

We hope you found this helpful!

The Malpaso Singletrack Mountain Bike Trails near Sayulita are some of the first trails in Mexico specifically designed and built for mountain biking.

The trails take you through the lush jungle in the area between Sayulita and San Pancho, with rides varying from mellow singletrack to challenging and fast routes with berms, steep climbs and rock gardens.

The area in which the mountain bike trails pass through is majority privately owned. The owners are under no obligation to let us ride on their property, however, in order to support the local community, they provide access under certain regulations, with the goal of preserving the environment and ensuring no accidents happen on their property. Surf & Holiday In Sayulita area
By WildMex

Surfing in Sayulita, San Pancho and Punta De Mita: Your need-to-know Family Surf & Holiday Guide 2021

Family Surf & Holiday in Sayulita & Punta Mita

Surf Camp in Punta MitaIf you’re planning to do Surf & Holiday in Sayulita you shlould know that this area is great for families in which all members would like to surf, or in which some are interested in surfing, and the rest would like to enrol in other adventurous or otherwise more relaxing activities in the area.

The surf break in Sayulita has sun loungers and beachfront restaurants, meaning it is possible for members of your family to relax and enjoy the beach and surroundings, whilst other members catch some fun waves on the break right in front! (This is also a great opportunity to get surf pictures, as the break finishes close to the shore!)

Alternatively, if you’re a family looking for a wilder surf adventure, why not get the Wildmex shuttle from Sayulita to Punta Mita and embark on an 8-minute jungle hike to the picturesque La Lancha beach – a crystal blue surf break with soft white sand! Whether you’re going for a surf day or fancy a picnic at the beach with the kids, both would be a suitable half day or full day out. (It’s good to keep in mind that there are no restaurants, bars or beach chairs at Lancha, so make sure that you bring some sunscreen, water, snacks and sunshade!)

Surf Lessons in SayulitaIf your family is composed of kids that are old enough and interested in surfing, we offer top-quality surf schooling and surf lessons for beginners in Sayulita and Punta Mita that can give the youngsters an opportunity to learn to surf in Mexico and catch their very first waves!

Surf lessons for adults and intermediate surfers are also available or if you’d prefer, just rent a surfboard in Sayulita or Punta Mita and head to the break yourself for some fun and adventure!

On common days, you’ll see beginner-intermediate teenagers joining their parents at breaks like La Lancha and Sayulita for family surf sessions!

(If you are wondering if teens can surf on point breaks in the area, why not check out this video from a family who came to visit us in 2019!)

When Surfing in Sayulita & Punta Mita – It Is Important To Be Aware Of 2 Things:

wetsuit top

  • Surf EtiquetteThe water at the Sayulita and Punta Mita area can be “chilly” from End of December till end of April, kids and smaller people are more sensitive to cold water, so, if you are visiting us during those dates, and plan on having the little ones spending some time in the water, make sure to bring a spring suit, or at least a wetsuit top for the, trust me, it will make a great difference
  • Everybody that goes out on a surf break, no matter their age or ability level, most respect Surfing Etiquette, this helps everyone be safe out there and have a great time. Please, if you feel like your teen is ready for the “grown-up waves” make sure first that they are a capable surfer and thoroughly understand the correct surfing etiquette.
If this is not the case, or you’re unsure, we would recommend hiring one of our certified surf instructors to accompany you or your teen to the break, where you can enjoy a personal surf session including inside local knowledge of the wave as well as tips on how to improve your surfing ability!

Check out this super helpful page from our Friends at Swell Surf Camp with some valuable info on Surf Etiquette!

Safety For Yourself And Your Belongings Whilst Surfing Sayulita, Punta Mita And Other Local Breaks:

Ok, so, this is a really important subject and one that can transform your amazing Surf & Holiday in Sayulita from a great memory, to, “it was great but…”, in a second. Sadly, here in Mexico, it happens more often than we would like!

Even though not great, it should be comforting that 99.9% of the crime we get in the area is petty theft, and the .1% left is related to alcohol and drugs (people out partying, getting intoxicated and taking some not-so-smart decisions).

not at Burros.

Leave your valuables at your accommodation inside the safe, or if you are renting boards or taking coached sessions at any surf school, ask them to provide a safe storage location. At Wildmex we offer storage boxes for your bags, clothes and other such items at both our Sayulita and Punta Mita surfboard rental shop.

If you want to take pictures, we recommend that you do not leave your phone or camera unattended at the beach, if you are taking a surf lesson or coached surf session, we offer professional surf photography and can provide you with high-quality pictures or videos without risking your phone/camera, allowing you the peace of mind whilst enjoying your time in the water or at the beach.

There are particular locations, especially Sayulita, where “sandal theft” (yes you read right) – is a real thing. So sadly, if you are going surfing in Sayulita (or elsewhere) and if you expect to see your sandals again, we recommend that you leave them in a safe place, not at the beach. (Everyone walks barefoot all over town in Sayulita, so you won’t feel out of place!)

Staying Safe In Sayulita On Your Family Holiday – Staying One Step Ahead Of Thieves In Your Rented Accommodation

How to Keep Your Valuables Safe at the Beach. As locals, we like to offer our guests the inside knowledge to help keep you and your family safe during your vacation. Please be aware of this one situation which has been known to happen (mostly with private houses or apartments booked through booking sites) in the local area…

You arrive at your accommodation, after a long day of traveling, waking up at 4 am, connecting flights, eating airport food, not drinking enough water, etc. and you get into your Airbnb or Sayulita Life rental…

Check-ins in the area mostly happen on Saturday and Sundays, and once you do check in, you figure out, you’re starving! You leave the bags and belongings lying around and head out for dinner in the local town, only to come back a few hours later and find out your laptop, phone, ipad, Kindle, passport, etc. are all gone.

Unfortunately, this is a ritual that happens at many private rentals in the area, and has nothing to do with the owners, it is just thieves that have figured out check-in dates, tourist behavior (sorry guys, you are not that unique) and most importantly, how to effortlessly break-in into certain properties, making it a super simple and profitable way for them to make some easy and fast cash.

The police, the property owners and even the locals are coming together to put a stop to this kind of crime in Sayulita, and so far have been really successful, however, it still happens, and visitors being informed ahead of time can help us put an extra prevention layer for this not to happen.

So please, no matter how tired, hungry or intoxicated you are, leave your valuables in the safe before leaving your rental property!

Thanks for helping us all keep Sayulita, San Pancho and Punta Mita safe!

Surf & Holiday in Sayulita & Punta Mita – Which Boards Are Suitable For The Waves In The Area?

Most surf breaks in the area are suitable for Longboards, or Fish-Style shortboards with generous volume and a relatively wide outline.

There are some surf breaks that are suitable for performance shortboards, like San Pancho, Veneros and the Cove most of the time, however, in our experience, you will catch more waves and have a better time during most surf sessions in the area on a board designed for mellower waves.

For those of you who have limited experience with surfing and surfboards, here are some examples of boards that could be suitable for the area.

Longboards

firewire the gemFirewire, The Gem: Ideal performance longboard for small and mid-sized mellow waves. This board is great if you want to catch a ton of waves! The slick design on this board makes it ride really smooth and makes the wave easy to catch. This would be a great surfboard choice for a small and medium size day at La Lancha.

Walden Mega MagicWalden Mega Magic: We love this board! It has a vast amount of volume, can paddle into virtually anything, and its sharp back rails help generate good speed after a decent bottom turn. Walden Mega Magic are also really dynamic boards – people with different waves and ability levels can all ride them whilst having a great time in the water. This board would be great for a small day surfing Sayulita’s point break.

Shortboards

Firewire SeaSide orange colorThe last 5 years have seen a revolution on the shortboard design, boards now come in multiple shapes and materials, and different fin setups, this gives each model a special character, and, when teamed with a surfer, creates an even more unique style for every rider on every break. Our favorites are:

Firewire SeaSide: Wildmex customers love this board! It’s been known to catch waves like crazy and performs well, even on sharper turns. Make sure to rent it out with its intended fins, (the Machado Keel Fin) 50% of the smooth feeling related to this board, comes from these fins! You would be happy with this board at any break in the area with chest high waves, perhaps Burros or El Paredon would be the best suited. This would also be a great option for the Cove and El Faro on decent days.

Surf Board Rental Punta Mita

Firewire Baked Potato: The name might sound funny, but if you are looking to ride a shortboard when everyone else is riding a longboard, this is your go-to board. Try it out on a quad fin setup and you won’t be disappointed. Ride this board on small to medium days at La Lancha or even a decent day at Stinkys or El Anclote.

If you would like to rent one of these boards (or another) head to our rentals page here. If you require any more info on the area’s surf breaks, swells, tides and the right wind for each one, how to get to them, where to park, best times to surf in Sayulita, Punta Mita etc. go to our Sayulita and Punta Mita Surf Break Map and General info

How Do I Get To Sayulita, Punta Mita and San Pancho from Puerto Vallarta Airport?

  • The nearest airport is (PVR) – Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport, located in Puerto Vallarta. Once there, rental cars and taxis are easy to find just outside of the airport exit. Expect to pay between 300 – 500 pesos. Buses, however, are just as convenient and far less expensive. Located just left of the airport exit and across the bridge crossing the main highway, a bus stop can be found which will take you to Punta Mita, Sayulita or San Pancho for 100 pesos or less ( $5 usd approx). Buses are green and white, called Compostela, and clearly display their destinations on the front window.
  • Airports have the worst exchange rates, so we recommend exchanging just enough for transportation and then using an ATM or currency exchange once you arrive at your destination.
  • There is also a better exchange rate at the ATMs in Bucerias. You can take a bus there from Sayulita for close to $2.00 USD/ $40 pesos.
  • Naturally, if you aren’t from a Spanish speaking country, we would recommend practicing basics like asking ‘Are you going to [destination]?’ ¿Vas a [destination]? or ‘How much does it cost?’ ¿Cuanto cuesta? in Spanish.

What Are The Waves Like In Sayulita and Surrounding Areas?

  • Surfing in Sayulita

Learning to surf in Sayulita is the perfect spot as it is famous for its super fun longboard waves. It is best to surf here at mid-tide, working best with a southwest swell direction. Typically, expect a crowded line-up.

Best Time To Surf Sayulita

The far-left break nearest the point is great for first-day beginners to learn the basics of surfing. There is no face (steepness of the wave) on the waves on this side. They instantly break into mushy white water; making it perfect for simply learning to get comfortable on the board with paddling and standing up. This break has a sandy bottom, so there is no need to worry about scraping your feet on rocks or reef.

The middle break is the most popular and great for intermediate surfers. You will also find advanced surfers surfing here. It is just left to the river mouth, but in the winter season, it is not much of a river anymore. It is a peeling right-hand wave (breaks to the right, consistently. Great for the regular-footed surfers!). There is a nice face to this wave that is usually knee to waist high range on most days. Occasionally there will be bigger days in the chest to head high range. Here, the peak breaks right on top of a reef. You have to be super careful at low tide because there are many sea urchins in the winter season; when there is no water running through the river mouth to wash them all away. The waves here roll slowly, giving you time to stand up and the long face provides ample opportunity to ride the wave!

The far-right break is the least popular break but it can be super fun if you have a good grasp on surfing! It is just to the right of the river mouth. The wave almost mirrors the middle break, giving you a peeling left hand wave; it does break a bit faster, making it more of a challenge to surf this wave. It breaks on top of rocks, so do be careful here as well at low tide.

Conveniently, we offer high-grade surfboard rental in Sayulita with over 300+ high-quality surfboards, located just 30 seconds from the main beach. Find us here

  • Surfing in San Pancho

professional surferSan Pancho is a beach break with steep waves, ideal for short boarding and advanced surfers. It gets crowded here, in the evening mainly.

There is one long break here, breaking with both lefts and rights. The river mouth runs through the middle of the break. The waves here break a bit close to shore so you must be cautious during low tide. This wave can break nicely at all tide levels. The waves are steep and break quickly. Sometimes you can find lengthy waves here, but usually, they are short and there is not much opportunity for a lot of ride time on the faces of these waves. Buuuut the drop in here is super fun!

  • Surfing in Punta Mita (La Lancha)

La Lancha is a beautiful, secluded longboard break. Each break here has a fat mushy wave that’s super long. You will see surfers of all levels here. There are rights and lefts, depending on the break you are at. There is plenty of space to spread out here. It really only gets a crowd on the weekends (for the most part). There are rocks here – so be careful at all breaks during low tide. It breaks best with a north swell direction.

Surf Lessons In Punta MitaThe right side breaks just right of the lagoon. When there is a lot of rain the lagoon connects to the ocean. This side breaks mainly to the right and the waves are usually long with a fat, gently sloped face. There is a lot of flat rock on this side that spans a long distance so be careful at low tide.

The middle break is usually the spot to surf left-hand waves. It mirrors the right side with the same fat, gently sloped face. There are clusters of rocks on this side close to shore and also in the lineup, be careful at low tide.

The far left side can be a bit more advanced on the big days than the other side. It breaks to the right and to the left – so be careful when taking lefts because it is rocky on the left side. The wave comes in at an angle, there is more face on the right side of the wave, but there is a quicker drop when you take the left side of the wave. This side can be super fun on the smaller days because it holds enough power to almost always break nicely.

To get to the far left side you have to pass by a rock structure that juts out close to the shoreline. The wave breaks right in front of the resort there with the white beach chairs in front.

Best Time To Surf In Sayulita? – What Time Of The Year Are The Waves Best?

  • Winter season is when the bigger swells come in but overall you can find waves here all year long!
  • The swells in the area generally range from 2 to 4 feet (.6 to 1.2 meters).

What Is The Weather Like in Sayulita & Surrounding During Different Times Of The Year?

  • The weather in Nayarit is exceptional most of the year. Rivera Nayarit enjoys a mild tropical climate with a yearly average temperature of a comfortable 77° F (25 ºC).
  • Summer in Riviera Nayarit can be a bit warm for some, with average highs in the 90’s.
  • The rainy season comes in late June and lasts until early November. During the rainy season, the afternoon brings showers and relief from the summer heat. Occasional thunderstorms roll through in late summer providing an evening’s entertainment without interfering with daytime vacation activities.

How Do I Get To The Waves!

  • WildMex’s office in Sayulita is conveniently placed within a 1-minute walk from the main beach break. If you’d prefer to try out the waves at the more secluded beach of La Lancha, we offer shuttles from our location in Sayulita to our location at La Lancha every day at 8:00am, 11:00am, or 2:00pm. Check out further details here!

Where should I stay?

Where you choose to stay will definitely depend on your preferences:

  • Sayulita, about 45 minutes northwest of Puerto Vallarta, is known for consistent surf breaks and authentic local craftsmanship. Once a sleepy fishing town, Sayulita has grown exponentially in recent years and has become a popular tourist destination featuring many great Airbnb options, safe and reasonably priced hostels (such as Selina or La Redonda), and comfortable hotels along the north-facing beach. Sayulita has a good variety of restaurants, bars, and cafes in the area. If late-night noise might be an issue for you or your family, consider looking for housing outside of Sayulita’s main plaza area.
  • Punta Mita is a small town on the peninsula north of Puerto Vallarta. The peninsula is privately owned by Four Seasons which offers all-inclusive resort stays, but there are also plenty of options for Airbnb’s closer to town. Punta Mita is more calm and quiet than Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta, offering plenty of options for boat tours and surf lessons.
  • San Pancho is known as the cultural heart of Nayarit, managing to have preserved its rural essence and the authenticity of a picturesque Mexican beach town. With plenty of excellent restaurants and a thriving local music scene, San Pancho is a great place to escape the noise of Sayulita or Puerto Vallarta.

Is It Safe For Women in Sayulita and Surrounding Areas?

These are very safe destinations overall. Take caution by avoiding the beach in the night and taking the well-lit routes through town to get home.

Who Should Not Come?

People who don’t enjoy warm sunshine, warm ocean water, and palm-fringed ocean beaches wrapped in a lush cloak of verdant jungle.

Hey adventurers,

In January 2021 I traveled from Seattle to Sayulita to surf and dig mountain bike trails with WildMex.

At the time, the COVID-19 pandemic concerned me for two reasons. 1. I didn't want to accidentally contract the virus in Seattle and bring it to a small community on my way in. 2. While I was in Sayulita, the US government announced new COVID test requirements that I thought might make it hard to travel home.

Managing these 2 risks turned out to be very easy.

  1. Before leaving Seattle, I tested negative for COVID. While traveling I wore a mask, washed my hands often, and showed no new symptoms. In Sayulita, I wore a mask in grocery stores and slept in a tent to reduce indoor contact. The tent was probably unnecessary :). Many of my friends rented houses or stayed in local hostels without issues.A week before my departure, I booked an appointment online for an
  2. Antigen test from the Punta Mita Hospital. Punta Mita is a 20 minute shuttle ride from Sayulita, and the facilities were very clean and safe. The staff let me wait outdoors for my appointment and then quickly performed the nose swab in a sterile room. I received results later that evening by email and flew home two days later with no issues, sharing the lab results via PDF on my phone at the Puerto Vallarta airport.

I'm still not sure if it's very responsible to travel internationally right now, but if you want to visit Sayulita, I definitely recommend communicating with WildMex. They helped me find the Punta Mita hospital and travel around the area in what I felt like was a relatively low risk way.

Safe adventures friends,

Nathan, Seattle, 28

January 15th, 2021
Lets face it, no matter where in the world you live, what language you speak or how old you are, the last 10-12 months have probably changed how you live, study, travel, exercise and socialize.

The new regulations announced this week are no exception. Soon both the US CDC and Canadian Minister of Transportation will require a negative COVID-19 test to travel into their respective countries. This policy will begin on January 26, 2021 for Americans, and it began on January 7, 2021 Canadians.

The change may cause some visitors to second guess their visit to Wildmex’s Tropical Coastal Paradise, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita and Punta de Mita. They may worry it will be too complicated, expensive, or inconvenient to get a Negative Covid Test for their return home.

At Wildmex, we understand the concern of our potential guest. To help them, we are currently planning a simple, hassle free and inexpensive process to ensure our visitors can feel secure planning and enjoying their holidays. We want to make getting tested easy so you can get home safely.

We will provide another update here soon. Meanwhile, hold on tight. I am hopeful we have met the hardest challenges already, and that we are on a path to a healthier tomorrow.

Punta Burros Surf Trip

Hola! I am a volunteer at WildMex Surf & Adventure from Florida. This is an awesome surf & bike adventure company based out of La Lancha, Nayarit, Mexico. We have the opportunity to join surf and bike excursions with the rest of the team and customers after our work.

On Saturday October 3rd, another volunteer and I joined company owner, Javier, in the car to ride to the La Lancha shop from Sayulita shop after working some hours there. We joined the surf lesson group riding out to Punta Burros, Punta De Mita. We were assigned to clean the beach of trash there, and then our plan was to surf with the rest of the group after the beach cleanup was finished!

The 7 of us (2 instructors, 3 customers, the other volunteer and I) parked and walked the road down to the break at Burros. We spent about one hour cleaning washed up plastic and left behind rubbish off the beach; and the last hour surfing fun clean waves, about 3-4 feet in size.

Overall it was a very inviting and exciting experience. I am so happy that the company offers these opportunities during our off time to explore and adventure more places here in Nayarit, Mexico.

The benefits of women surfing

Surfing is a sport that isn’t defined by genders; so it would be a very big mistake to divide it as female or male.
Over time, women have acquired more participation in this sport, when historically, this activity had been exclusively directed at the male gender, and that hasn’t been unseen socially.
Surfing has many general benefits, but the great impact it has had physically and emotionally on women makes this sport a favourite among them. We invite you to be part of this practice creating a safe, respectful and pleasant social environment for everyone. Now, we’ll present 5 benefits that surfing has to offer you as a woman:

Physique
Being in shape is a wonderful benefit of surfing that can be visually perceived. While surfing, your muscles contract constantly while paddling out or to catch a wave working the strenght of your upper body and while riding the waves to hold your balance on the board you will be toning your legs, tighs, and buttocks ! It is a super wholesome sport!

Coordination
Being on top of the board is not easy, so while you do this activity you will acquire these skills that will keep you in balance and help you ride the waves. Inspect the sets of the waves by coordinating the timing, type, & force of the waves to increase your chances of riding a wave out.

Nature
Nature is part of the experience when you practice this sport, because apart from being in direct contact with the ocean, sometimes the beaches offer you beautiful
landscapes that captivate your eyes, especially on virgin beaches. Also, a connection with the environment is generated, that allows you to create awareness
of natural resources, and learn to protect and the place you’ve just visited by leaving it clean.

Anti-stress
Surfing is considered the best option you can take to get away from a bad day because the experience starts from the moment you have contact with the air, sand, and water. The satisfaction of taking a wave helps your brain by feeling rewarded, having a balanced body and mind. Exercise teaches your body to cope with higher levels of cortisol, which helps reduce anxiety and stress.

Socializing

This sport is characterized as being an activity that’s carried out in a group. It doesn’tmatter if they know each other or not, you can get to know the people who are
surfing in the same place, and as a result, you’ll end up making more friends than you imagined, connecting with like minded individuals and creating long lasting friendships.

The American writer, Jon Kabat-zinn, once mentioned that: “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf” a sentence that has had an impact on many people like Dayana. She confirms that it is a phrase that has been tattooed as a philosophy of life.

Dayana Venegas, 22 years old Mexican surfer, Puerto Vallarta’s resident, comes to tell us about her experience in the world of surfing.
No doubt, she has confirmed the aforementioned benefits to us, for her, surfing means living in the present and enjoying every second of life, it tells us that there’s no way to think about anything else when you are in the sea:
“Since I’ve come to the world of surfing, I’ve had great physical and mental change, increasing my balance and strength, providing feelings of peace and freedom”
Dayana, like every woman in the sport’s world, has run into the barriers of social stigma and even so, she continues to do what she is most passionate about:
“I’ve come across some people who say that surfing is only for men and when I tell them that I surf, they are shocked; but the truth is that I have surfed with my friends (men) and I have been lucky that we treat each other in the same way, without gender privileges. Besides, they tend to motivate me to continue practising this sport that I really like one”.

Dayana is the living example of many women who have had the experience of the whole context that revolves around the board. You, like her, can explore this sport and get all the benefits that surfing has to offer.

The Beach is Calling

After an extended period of closed public spaces and stay-at-home orders, things are gradually coming back to life here in Puerto Vallarta and the beaches are officially reopened and slowly repopulating – more pristine than before. In the streets of Sayulita, you can feel vibrant energy returning as visitors and residents are out and about, enjoying live music and local restaurants. Some of us may feel we are emerging from a hibernation of sorts. There is a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the jungle and beaches, and the buzzing of street life in the town.

On warm days in June and July, it has hard to find a better place to spend an afternoon than out on the water surfing or paddleboarding. The colors from this vantage point at La Lancha beach in Punta Mita are especially beautiful this time of year. From your board, you see vast blue up to the horizon as you scan for incoming waves. Turning your head, a bright green jungle spreads across rolling hills. These hills are becoming greener and greener each day because during the summer months, the rains begin and new life cycles start. The jungle is teeming with lush new growth. In the evening, clouds speckle what is often a completely clear sky in other seasons, making for incredible multicolored sunsets with deep oranges, light pinks and purples.

Nayarit boasts a mild tropical climate, similar to that of the islands of Hawaii, which is located on the same latitude as this area. While the summer months in Nayarit are the warmest (with average highs in the high 80s Fahrenheit) and most humid of the year, the rains cool down the air. The heaviest rains begin in mid-July, and in June there are occasional evening showers.

The rainy season is a very important period for all of Bahia de Banderas. Surrounding mountain ranges and local agriculture are hugely benefitted by the rainfall. With the first few rains of the year, an immediate change is visible – the Sierra Madre mountain range goes from a light brown color to a vivid green in a matter of days. The rivers in the area also come to life, carrying with them vital nutrients from the mountains that empty into the ocean and nourish life there.
For those of us here, the rainy season can be an opportunity for cleansing and revitalization. After several months of quarantine and with all the changes caused by the pandemic, it is important to pause and reset, doing what is healthy for our bodies and minds. Surrounded by the ocean and lush green vegetation here in Bahia de Banderas, this reset comes naturally.

Hope to see you soon out on the water!

5 Common Surfing Mistakes

As a new surfer, or even an experienced one, there is a chance that you may be doing some things incorrectly. There is no need to worry, though; surfing mistakes are natural and a big part of the learning process. Below, you will find the 5 most common surfing mistakes and how to correct them.

1. USING THE WRONG BOARD
Perhaps the most common mistake among new surfers is choosing a board that is not the right size for them. You want to make sure that you are selecting a board that is appropriate for your skill level. While shortboards may look cooler, longer ones are much easier and safer for beginners. You also want to use a board that is “not only the right one for your weight, size, and capability but also that [is] right for the type of waves you’re going to be catching”.

2. NOT WATCHING WHERE YOU’RE GOING
It may be tempting to keep your eyes trained on your board to make sure you are standing correctly, but this will only increase the chances of you wiping out. You want to make sure to look out in front of you and keep your eyes focused on your path.

3. NOT TRAINING ON DRY LAND
The Inertia mentions the importance of training on dry land. Practicing pop-ups before you go out on the water can be very helpful because it begins to build muscle memory and will make it easier for you to be able to do this on aboard. Also practicing stance and balance on land will help you carry that over to the water.

4. NOT HAVING A PROPER STANCE
A proper stance is very important while surfing. You must always keep a low center of gravity to keep your balance. To do this, you must bend your knees and keep a low stance. Make sure not to bend your shoulders or flail your arms; this will throw off your balance.

5. STANDING IN THE WRONG SPOT
You may have your stance down, but if you put your feet in the wrong spot, there is still a good chance of wiping out. When you pop up, you want to put your feet in the center of the board and make sure to keep them parallel to each other.
