Whether your first board was a second-hand “foamie” or your gramps old longboard, we’re here to tell you that the “foamie” or soft-top surfboard offers more than what meets the naked eye, PLUS how you’ll know when you’ve outgrown it and when you’re ready for bigger and better things or smaller, in this case - should you desire.
Keep reading to find out more…
Let’s face it, too many of us start on boards we have no business waxing up! But Wildmex is here to help you avoid that.
We believe there’s a board for every surfer, especially the newbies!
Why Learning On A Longboard Is Best?
Increased wave count = you’ll catch more waves = accelerate your learning
You’ll paddle faster and easier
You’ll get easy take-offs and longer rides
You’ll feel more stable and balanced to stand up
You’ll be left with a positive experience and more motivation to go out again
Bigger board = More waves = Less frustration
“Foamies” are forgiving, meaning, your takeoff timing is not as critical!
When You Know You’re Ready For A Shorter Board
You're catching green waves mostly when you want
You know how to read waves
You're successfully riding around 70% of the session
You can paddle out and make it out the back
You can surf down the line
You feel in control of your board in a crowd and in whitewater
Too often, people unknowingly start with the wrong boards and never learn because they can't catch any waves! Beginner surfers and surf schools enjoy the use of foamies as a fun and versatile surfboard for everyone. You betcha...Everyone.
The more time you spend learning on longboards, the faster you'll progress to funboards > hybrids > shortboards - if that's your ultimate goal.
At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun and connecting with mother nature! Stick to this path, and you’ll be the most stoked person in the water, every session.
We were taught that bigger isn't necessarily better but, in this particular case, it just might be. Here’s why you shouldn’t shy away from longboarding this season…
It’s safe to say that the art of longboarding is timeless.
You could easily say that longboard surfing is a state of mind, a meditation or that place of ‘zen’.
So, as die-hard wave chasers, we at Wildmex are here to tell you exactly why you SHOULD opt for a different wave riding experience, like longboard surfing!
Let’s face it, winter season at home can be long, cold and flat, and we’re not just talking about the swell!

Just 44 km north of Puerto Vallarta on Federal Hwy 200, this humble and quaint Mexican town offers places to see and ways to wander, a true nature lover's paradise and a sure escape from busy crowds and bustling life.
What Makes Higuera Blanca Unique?
The main characteristic about this pueblo is that it’s not a beach town! Meaning there aren’t many tourists and the prices are waaay cheaper. Sitting only around 0.5miles or 1km from the nearest beach, this doesn’t serve much of a problem if you opt to hire a motorcycle or car, which is advised if staying in this area anyway.
This balanced town is way more about the whole town rather than just ‘beach life’, home to many trees, shade, greenery and wildlife, inclusive of the Green Parakeet - a magnificent green parrot which can be seen daily, feasting on the fig treetops!
Higuera Blanca is unique in the sense that it’s authentically Mexican, by that, we mean damn tasty, home-cooked cuisine, cooked by Mexicans for Mexicans! Higuera Blanca boasts something called ‘cenadurias’, a place to experience and taste the real Mexico. Food cooked and served right on the porch of the chef’s house, where you’ll eat besides other locals! - It doesn’t get much more authentic than that, right? Think tasty tostadas, brimful enchiladas and eye-popping Pozole! If you’re looking for alternatives to Sayulita in terms of genuine Mexican experience, here’s the place to find it.

The plaza is big, beautiful and clean, bountiful with blooming trees and kids who play blissfully with skateboards and bicycles. Which Type Of Tourist Is Higuera Blanca Not Suitable For?
Higuera Blanca is not suitable for solo travellers looking to make connections fast or people that like to party due to its very quiet atmosphere.
It is also not suitable for those who want the beach on their doorstep or those that want to travel around but aren’t looking to hire a car or motorcycle as this is the recommended form of transport for the Higuera Blanca area.
As of summer 2021, the current WIFI is not great here, there are Satellite and WIFI options, however, they come with the regular Satellite and WIFI issues, such as lag and bad performance when cloudy or rainy, meaning travellers who rely on the internet for work shouldn’t plan to pitch up here for the long run.
Summary

1. PACK Plenty’o water!
Whether you’re taking on one of the best hikes in San Pancho or exploring some of the exquisite hiking trails in Punta Mita, when it comes to calculating your water consumption -always, pack, more!
When you already think you have enough, pack another!
Having enough water with you during your hike in Sayulita and the surrounding areas is fundamental if you want to keep that energy high and avoid any dehydration episodes. (You may think this could never happen to you but you’d be surprised how many people get caught out!) From hiking intensity to temperature and climate, your water levels will differ, so take all of these into consideration before your hike and plan accordingly!
Everyone’s water needs will vary depending on their body weight however, generally, you should aim to drink around 1 litre for every two hours of hiking.
To change things up, consider alternating between plain water and a sports drink with electrolytes such as Powerade!
2. STAY POSITIVE
Wildmex hikes in Punta Mita & Sayulita are all about rolling with the good vibes!
BUT, we’ve all been there…You reach that uphill climb on your way to San Pancho and you just don’t think you can make it anymore! You have that negative chitter-chatter in your mind that’s telling you you can’t do it and well, all the fun is gone! Having a positive mental attitude is probably the most important trait for completing a hike and enjoying it!
Learning how to smile when times get tough really is a game-changing ability!
So, when rough moments roll through, always remember – the most difficult situations are always just temporary and well, it could be worse… you could be sitting behind an office desk, with a 10-page assignment due the next day!
3. FOOT FOCUS
Foot focus means taking super duper care of your fabulous feet – after all, they are your vehicle to victory!
Whether that means doing your research beforehand on which walking trainers or synthetic socks will be best suited for your hike in Sayulita or investing in a proper pair of hiking boots, this prior prep will be sure to save your souls from blisters, pain and suffering.
When your feet are happy, so will you be!
The majority of hikers in Sayulita wear a combination of lightweight running shoes, breathable socks, and trail-running gaiters.
4. EAT RIGHT
When hiking in San Pancho or any other local trail there’s no doubt you’re gonna need fuel for the road. Fulfilling your hiker hunger with real food such as avocados, sandwiches, fresh fruit and nuts are all recommended!
Yet remember, the more you stash in a backpack, the harder it is to hike, so opt mainly for high-calorie, nutritious foods that are relatively lightweight and nutrient-dense!
5. Kit-up right!
Whether you’re prepping for Hiking Monkey Mountain in Sayulita or taking the jungle route through San Pancho, preparing for your hike with the proper kit is gonna’ make your hiking adventure waaay more pleasurable.
When hiking in Punta Mita & Sayulita, look at gearing up with lightweight shirts, tops, shorts and pants in white, tan or khaki. These lighter hues retract the sun’s light and therefore will keep you much cooler. We recommend wearing loose, breathable clothing, always lightweight and loose-fitting to help regulate your body temperature.
Choosing materials such as nylon and polyester are also good choices!
Don’t forget your sunglasses, bug spray and sunscreen – all must-haves for our local hikes and trails!
6. CHECK-IN WITH YOURSELF
One of our very best top-tips for hiking like a pro’ here on the Riviera Nayarit is listening to yourself!
How does your body feel? Do you need to rest? Do you need to stretch?
Ask yourself “what’s up?” and check-in with yourself regularly.
Checking in with yourself on a hike, just as you would a friend, ensures you’re in that tip-top shape to get the most out of the experience and in you stay in your very best condition.
So, whether you’re coming to disconnect from the outside world, to see the panoramic views or to challenge your physical and mental abilities, our hikes in Sayulita, Punta Mita & San Pancho offer striking experience with nature, the untouched surroundings and lasting social connections!
You’ll embark on profoundly rewarding achievements, transformative experiences and spend plenty’o time connecting with nature, which means embarking on a hike here in Sayulita and Punta de Mita, might just be the best decision you’ll make, whilst on your trip here in the Riviera Nayarit.

Rainy season is here in Sayulita and Punta Mita! But does that stop the wave-hungry surfers and surfistas and our adventure-devoted team at Wildmex from surfing La Lancha? Hell noppp! Whatever the weather, our Wildmex team will always find a way to overcome these little hiccups in life, (especially when the waves are waiting for us on the other side!)
For those of you that don’t know, in general, there are two main seasons in the Riviera Nayarit – the rainy season, which runs from June through to mid-October and the dry season which runs from mid-October through to June.
However, even in the rainy season, the rain normally falls in short bursts, most often at night or in the late afternoon, with most days being hot and dry, leaving most of the day free for outdoor activities such as stand up paddleboarding in Punta Mita and surfing in La Lancha!
However, for those of you that do know the area, you’ll be fully aware that Sayulita and Punta Mita’s locations on the Central Pacific coast of Mexico are hemmed in by luscious jungle wilderness, giving it that subtropical climate. So, when the rainstorms do come in heavy downpours, our wild tropical trails to our surf beaches become, well, even wilder!

After winning back public access to La Lancha beach, a long-favourite surf break in the area for locals and tourists in 2016, Wildmex are, as always, 100% committed to serving its community of adventure-seekers and nature-lovers, and want to continue to see the coastal communities and tourists alike, enjoy the beaches, surf, nature and wildlife this paradise has to offer with ease.
So, as authorized by Profepa and in conjunction with Punta MITA, Wildmex took quick action last week by building temporary bridges and trail crossings, allowing the community to continue their daily adventure activities as per usual! Meaning surf lessons in La Lancha, surfboard rental in Punta Mita and stand up paddle boarding in Punta Mita have continued as normal.
These trail crossings built by our on-the-ball team, cover the 10-minute jungle stretch and sole beach access to La Lancha’s famous surfing beach boasting multiple left-hand and right-hand breaks.
This is what Javier Chavez Wildmex’s CEO and founder had to say about the bridge building venture “_This is the beginning of a project that will better the access to La Lancha Beach for Surfers and all visitors, making getting to the beach safer, more enjoyable and reduce the impact on the surrounding environment. We ask all visitors to be really respectful of nature, wildlife, and all other beach users_”. We are on a mission and that mission is catching waves, exercising the mind, being one with nature and hanging tight with our coastal crew, so with that in mind, nothing can stop us… It’s all in a day’s work for our Wildmex team!

Let’s face it, choosing between the 4+ different surfboard fin setups can be a little like doing Chinese arithmetic – pretty damn confusing!
With so many options to choose from, sometimes you just don’t know where to start!
But when you finally do get your head around the mystery, oh boy does it make all the difference to your sessions, improvement and ability in the water, let’s say it’s a little sumthin’ like wave wizardry! Our surf camp in Sayulita & Punta Mita’s hang-ten team at Wildmex put this little blog together to help you get to grips and get the most out of your surfboard fin setup! After all, the surf theory is just as important as the practical work and when combining the two, you’ll, without doubt, excel waaay faster than those not willing to do the homework! So, lead with your head and fly into this blog with your learning cap on, you’re sure to learn a fin or two (pardon the pun!) about which configuration is best suited to you and the conditions!
What are Surfboard fins and why do we use them?
Surfboard fins are hydrofoils mounted towards the tail of a surfboard to enhance directional stability and the user’s control through foot-steering.
Fins are a vital variable to take into consideration for any surfboard, they help to improve performance, gain speed, stabilise your surfboard and prevent it from skidding sideways like a skimboard or bodyboard!
Surf theory | Wildmex surf camps in Punta Mita & Sayulita
Hang tight with our certified, local surf coaches and our international surf lovers at our year-round surf camps in Punta Mita & Sayulita and you’ll learn all the tricks needed to ride the line, bottom turn, cutback and snap! Oh, and you’ll also learn the crucial theory too, elevating your surfing abilities to greater heights!
Single Fin
As the original surfboard set up created by the famous Tom Blake almost 100 years ago and still used until this day as the most common configuration amongst longboards, there’s no doubting that this classic one-fin setup really has stood the test of time amongst nose riders. The single fin creates great straight-line speed and offers the ability to foot-steer controlled, refined and graceful turns, making it pretty much perfect for smaller to medium surf days! This one-fin setup creates very little drag, meaning it’s ideal for straight shot surfing, providing you with steadiness, control and predictability in your session.
Turning with the single fin can be limited, however, it is possible to move the fin forward for a looser feel, or further back to gain more control.
Twin Fin
This highly responsive two-fin setup allows for fun, manoeuvrable and merrymaking rides, adapting well to waist and head-high waves.
The twin fin configuration is more commonly seen on shortboards to enhance speed and offers the impressive ability for sharp and speedy manoeuvres, not to mention playful, drawn-out turns.
The downside? The twin fin setup is not ideal for big-wave riding, as the lacking centre fin as seen on the ‘thruster’ can cause you to spin out on moves such as rounded cutbacks and bottom turns.
Thruster Fin
As the most popular setup amongst modern-day surfers, this 3-fin ‘thruster’ setup will offer you stability, control and allows for manoeuvrability when performing tricks and turns. The thruster configuration gives you the option to either ride twin or single too as the fins are removable, ensuring you’ll have the ideal setup on any given day and condition! This must-have option offers room for flexibility, improvement and pleasure, best ridden in predictable or high-quality waves.
Quad Fin
You guessed it, it’s a 4-fin setup! The quad fin was built for speeeeeed! An evolution of the twin-fin, built for smaller days and hollow waves which require you to have that extra oomph.
Developed in the ’80s, the quad fin configuration helps to generate speed by channelling water to the tail for extra acceleration, performing well when it comes to carrying out those epic power turns.
The two lateral and two centre fins help you say adios to drag and whatsuuup to stability, big-wave surfing and crackin’ control.
So there you have it, those were just some of the many different types of surfboard fin setups currently used today!
To find out the best fin setup for you, we recommend trying out a variety of configurations in a variety of different conditions! You may find your favourite in an instant or even settle on two or three preferred styles depending on your mood and the conditions!
