"I am a beginner surfer and swimmer. The water conditions were undeniably dangerous for someone of my experience but I was not advised well or given any reassurance by the instructor. I mentioned several times to the instructor throughout the teaching / preparation process that I’m a beginner swimmer and I was unsure about the wave height and water depth, but all he said were things like “nobody has died before” and making jokes about how the waves aren’t as bad as X and how I’m being forced to go like it’s the military. He even did not give me a clear answer when I asked how far out we would be paddling – just made another joke.
The instructor did not guide us clearly on how to walk / paddle into the water, leading me and my partner to get knocked over several times. He was clearly frustrated with us and came back to drag us forward. At this point I felt pressured and very uncomfortable with going further due to it feeling unsafe. I told the instructor that I wanted to go back to shore but he was hesitant and kind of pressured me to keep going until I insisted. I turned around and paddled back to shore and waited on the beach for my partner to finish her lesson. Afterwards the instructor was relatively friendly and took care of my partner who had a large scratch from being knocked over entering the water.
My partner told me afterwards that it was the right decision for me to skip out because even she (who has much more surf and swim experience than me) had a few moments where she felt unsafe in the water."
